Course Aims:

Students will develop the ability to formulate, clarify, and express their ideas; adapt their speech to a wide range of circumstances; listen, understand and respond appropriately to others. They will develop their ability to read accurately and fluently; understand, respond to and enjoy literature of increasing complexity drawn from the English literary heritage and from different cultures and traditions; and analyse and evaluate a wide range of texts. Students will develop ability to construct and convey meaning in written standard English, including the use of compositional skills to develop ideas and communicate meaning to a reader. Develop a wide range of vocabulary; organising and structuring sentences grammatically.

Course Description:

Five pieces of Coursework

How will I learn:

Through the study of novels, plays, poetry, media and non-fiction texts. They will deconstruct and analyse news reports, articles, films, advertisements, magazines, scripts and a wealth of material and resources. They will experience and draw on performances by poets and drama group and be able to talk to authors about writing styles.

Speaking and Listening:

Pupils develop confidence and ability in speaking for public and formal purposes, evaluating the way language is used. They read classic and contemporary texts and explore social and moral issues.

Reading:

Pupils develop their reading skills, becoming enthusiastic, discriminating and responsive readers, understanding layers of meaning and appreciating what they read on a critical level, why texts are influential or significant and how meaning is conveyed in different forms.

Writing:

Pupils develop confidence and skill in writing for a range of purposes developing their own distinctive style. They learn to write correctly, using different formats, layouts and presentational devices.

Speaking and Listening:

Pupils reflect on the development of their abilities as speakers in a range of different contexts, listen for a specific purpose, paying sustained attention and selecting for comment or question that which is relevant.

Reading:

Pupils develop ability to combine information from a variety of sources, undertake independent research using a range of reading strategies, trace the development of themes, values or ideas in the texts and analyse the overall structure to identify how key ideas are developed.

Writing:

Pupils experiment with different styles of writing, planning, drafting and proofreading, using writing for thinking and learning, developing the use of commentary and description in narrative and explaining complex ideas and information clearly.

Pupils develop the ability to reflect on their skills as speakers in a range of contexts; identifying areas for improvement. They use Standard English to explain, explore or justify ideas; compare points of view, identifying themes and issues raised by discussion.

Pupils review and extend their own strategies for locating, appraising and extracting relevant information. They develop their ability to analyse social, historical and cultural context, explaining their significance and relevance over time and learn to evaluate their own critical writing about texts.

Writing:

Pupils will develop their ability to write for a range of purposes and audiences; produce formal essays in Standard English, writing fluently and legibly with technical accuracy. Explore different forms of writing, developing the use of literary devices and creative features of language.
