Mathematics

Course Title:  GCSE Mathematics Syllabus B

Examination Board:  AQA

Entry Requirements (if appropriate): Not Applicable

Contact: Mr Haddon

Course Aims:

  • To develop the confidence to use mathematics to tackle problems in the work place and everyday life;
  • To develop an ability to think and reason mathematically;
  • To realise the application of mathematics in the world around them;
  • To develop a firm foundation for appropriate further study.

Course Description:

The qualification prepares candidates for the real world of work of further education.  The course is modular consisting of Data Handling, Number and Shape Space and Measure and Algebra.

How will I learn:

Candidates learn through a range of activities, both practical and theoretical, which cover the whole content of the course.  These activities help to develop an understanding of mathematics and give an opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their ability to use and apply mathematics.  The qualification is assessed through two examinations taken at either foundation or higher tier.

Possible Career Pathways:

Candidates gain skills that are useful in further study and in jobs in many different areas.  In the world of work, the importance of mathematics is growing daily.  It is key to science and engineering, and is indispensable to the commercial world.  Besides these obvious applications, there is also a growing use of mathematics in areas such as history and geography, particularly in the form of statistical analysis.

Subject summary: Key Stage 3 Maths Programme of Study

During Key Stage 3 students take increasing responsibility for planning and executing their work.  They extend their calculation skills to fractions, percentages and decimals, and begin to understand the importance of proportional reasoning.  They are beginning to use algebraic techniques and symbols with confidence.  Students progress from a simple understanding of the features of shape and space to using definitions and reasoning to understand geometrical objects.  They communicate mathematics in speech and a variety of written forms, explaining their reasoning to others.  Students work with increasing confidence and flexibility to solve unfamiliar problems.  They develop positive attitudes towards mathematics and increasingly make connections between different aspects of mathematics.

Subject summary: Key Stage 4 Maths Programme of Study

During Key Stage 4 students are taught the knowledge, skills and understanding through:-

  • Activities that ensure they become familiar with and confident using standard procedures for a range of calculations;
  • Solving familiar and unfamiliar problems in a range of numerical, algebraic and graphical contexts and in open-ended and closed form;
  • Using standard notations for decimals, fractions, percentages, ratio and indices;
  • Activities that show algebra, as an extension of number using symbols;
  • Activities focused on the major ideas of statistics, including using appropriate populations and representative samples, using different measurement scales, using probability and using inferences to make decisions
